Master Planning Sustainable Historic Structures (Course 210) FY2025

Objective

This course focuses on sustainable reuse of historic structures and landscapes in installation building planning. Emphasizing compliance with public laws and DoD UFC 2-100-01, it guides planners and preservation experts in implementing strategies for natural, cultural, and historic resource management, aligning with Army and DoD master planning policies. All instruction will take place in Arlington, VA. Courses are instructed by military and federal representatives. This course is part of the Department of Defense Master Planning Institute in partnership with the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers.

Course Description

This course offers in-depth discussions and practical exercises focusing on the following crucial planning activities:

• Strategies, Policies, Guidelines: Explore federal historic preservation through an array of strategies, policies, and guidelines, gaining insight into the intricate framework governing historic sites and cultural heritage.
• Understanding Conditions: Interpret and assess the quality of historic properties, considering historical significance and preservation standards.
• Sustainment, Restoration, and Modernization: Elaborate on significant characteristics of historic structures for reuse, aligning with the Secretary of the Interior's Standards. Explore how efforts align with preservation principles.
• Evaluating Assets: Systematically appraise historic structures and landscapes using a technical methodology.
• Preservation as Conservation: Articulate energy and water conservation strategies for diverse facilities, integrating preservation with sustainable practices.
• Planning for Preservation: Develop plans leveraging historic properties, enhancing sense of place, reducing energy footprint, and aligning with mission requirements. Foster harmonious preservation integration into broader planning.

Target Audience

Anthropologists, Archaeologists, Engineers, Architects, Planners, and Real Property Specialists, whether working as government employees, in the consulting community, or within the general public. It satisfies the continuing education criteria for American Institute of Certified Planners certification. Completion of Master Planning Practices and Principles is advised prior to enrollment in this class.
