Course Description

Communication for DoD Master Planners is a comprehensive course designed to equip future DoD planners with the essential communication skills necessary to effectively engage stakeholders and convey complex ideas through verbal, written and graphic communication. Combining theoretical foundations and practical applications, students will learn how to articulate their vision, facilitate meaningful dialogue, and build consensus within multidisciplinary teams. Topics covered include verbal and nonverbal communication, persuasive techniques, cross-cultural communication, public speaking, and the use of hand drawn, digital tools and media in DoD urban planning contexts. All instruction will be in Arlington, VA. Courses are instructed by military and federal representatives. This course is part of the Department of Defense Master Planning Institute in partnership with the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers. 

Learning Objectives

  • Develop an understanding of the role of communication in the urban planning process and its impact on project success.
  • Enhance written communication skills to effectively convey ideas, proposals, and recommendations.
  • Cultivate active listening skills to empathetically engage with stakeholders in a collaborative manner.
  • Gain confidence in public speaking through practical exercises and presentations, including techniques for delivering engaging and informative presentations.
  • Acquire proficiency in using hand drawn and digital tools and media platforms to enhance communication efforts, including graphic visualization, social media outreach, and storytelling.

Target Audience

Government employees, including Engineers, Planners, and Real Property Specialists, as well as Master Planners. It is also suitable for individuals in the consulting community and the general public. The course meets the continuing education requirements for the American Institute of Certified Planners certification. Prior completion of Master Planning Practices and Principles is recommended before enrolling in this class.
